Fijian local professional golfer Sam Lee tees off in his second event of the year at the SP Brewery PNG Open which tees of today in Port Moresby.

Lee’s last event was the ISPS HANDA New Zealand Open where he failed to make the weekend rounds after missing the cut in a field packed with international stars.

The Natadola Bay member travels to Papua New Guinea to contest the event which was just last year added to the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournament schedule.

This year marks Lee’s first trip to Papua New Guinea but he’ll no doubt be acclimatised to the Pacific region’s steamy climate having played most of his golf, and achieved his best career results around the Pacific Islands.

This week provides the perfect preparation to conditions Lee hopes to expect in the 2017 Fiji International on 17-20 August where he hopes to gain a start and better his best finish on the Tour to date after a T26 finish in 2015.

A win in the PNG Open would guarantee Lee a place on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia schedule until the end of 2018 as well as a share of the AU$142,000 prize pool.

More importantly, it will provide the 26-year-old a start in the Fiji International, which he is currently not assured of.

The SP Brewery Papua New Guinea Golf Open ends on Sunday at Royal Port Moresby Golf Club.

The winner will receive Official World Golf Ranking Points and become fully exempt on to the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia for the remainder of this season plus a further season.
