The Labasa Drainage Board chairperson Maikali Dimuri is advising residents of Naodamu and Nasekula in Labasa to stop dumping rubbish in the nearby rivers.

He said piles of rubbish in the river had caused blockage at the floodgates and at times it caused flash flooding during heavy rain.

The call comes after the board’s plans to relocate the floodgates further downstream to control flooding issues in future.

“The engineer inspected the floodgates on April 28 and found rubbish at the gate and cleared it,” Mr Dimuri said.

“The engineer then revisited the gate for inspection last weekend and he had to dive into the water and found out the bracket rusted and replaced it.

“The Drainage Board future plan is to move the floodgate further downstream which will avoid flooding,” Mr Dimuri said.

Nasekula Village headman Pita Davelevu said: “I suggested the works to be done during the school holiday because when school will begin students will use the road beside the floodgates.

“We don’t want to see children crossing flooded roads.”
