After a successful beginning to market the culture and art of Lau yesterday, a group of 300 women have decided that this income-generating project would now be a monthly show.

The women from Lau came forward with their hand-made art to mark the Lau Market Day at the Yatu Lau Arcade in Suva.

The treasurer of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Yavusa Ko Lau, Kesaia Fung, said the market day served two purposes.

“Firstly, we ladies decided to develop our income generating skills as we focus on being independent.

“Secondly, this is bonding with our Lau origin women who now live on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu,” Ms Fung said.

Ms Fung, 64, a retired civil servant, said the meeting not only brought elders together, but the young mothers, solo mothers, teenagers and children, and share the various Lau culture among them.

“We not only sell art, but specifically Lau food for example, fish in lolo, vudi and more of what Lau cuisine is famous for,” she said.

Ms Fung said the money earned from the sales would be used by the sellers for their development or charity.
