Our Peacekeepers Labelled ‘Remarkable’

Head of Mission and Force Commander for the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), Major-General Jai Shanker Menon, has labelled the task carried out by Fijian Peacekeepers serving in the Golan Heights as “remarkable”.

He made special mention of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Battalion (Battalion 4) who were instrumental in the re-occupation of Camp Faouar in November last year.

“I wish to recognise at this stage the role that Fiji Batt played in the re-occupation of Camp Faouar  on 15th November 2016, and in doing so, Fiji Battalion 4 have accomplished a remarkable task that has ensured the mission’s future existence,” Major-General Menon said.

“I have closely monitored the activities of all contingents under UNDOF and I am proud to say that Fiji Battalion 4 have excelled in their role as loyal, dedicated and committed Peacekeepers in all the areas and responsibilities assigned to them. Hands and footprints of Fiji Battalion 4 are all over the mission from resupplying of Hermon positions in the North to providing security to Observer Group Golan (OGG) personnel in the South.”

Fijian Peacekeepers were honoured in a Military Medal Parade at the Camp Ziouani Parade square last month.

Major-General Menon was chief guest.

It is the norm in the military to honour the men and women in uniform in appreciation for their dedication.

Major-General Menon also thanked the Fijian Government for its commitment and support to the UNDOF mission resulting in the provision of seven Bushmasters to the 4th Battalion 1st Fiji Infantry regiment in March this year.

He also congratulated Lieutenant-Colonel Daunivakasala Kalitabua Ravunakana, the Commanding Officer Fiji Battalion for his outstanding leadership and tremendous achievements.

The 1st Fiji Infantry Regiment then presented a march pass to acknowledge with distinction the honors bestowed on them.

Major Waisale Cama said he was humbled with respect to be the Parade Commander for the occasion.

Lieutenant-Colonel Ravunakana said: “The Fiji Battalion 4 Medals Parade reflects the culmination of the diligent work and sacrifice put in by its servicemen and women for the past seven months. With the presence of a number of our families that were present to witness the occasion, it made the event more homely and memorable.”

He also thanked the support from headquarters RFMF and the prayers offered by families.

“We will continue to work hard and set the pace to success for our fellow comrades – incoming Battalion 5.”

Some Fijian families also attended the ceremony.

Guests were later entertained by Fijian soldiers through traditional dance and song.
