To enhance teaching in mathematics, primary school teachers from Macuata and Bua province attended a four-day Numeracy Workshop at Bethel Primary School in Labasa.

Rosalia Ratusili, a teacher of Naruwai Village School in Bua, said the workshop organised by the Ministry of Education was a timely one because Term Two was about to begin.

“During the first school term we did face challenges while teaching mathematics to students,” Ms Ratusili said.

“Not many like to calculate numbers. This workshop has enabled me to work on different strategies to generate interest for my students.”

Nasekula District School head teacher Sisilia Cokanauto told the gathering of 174 teachers at the workshop that his teachers were facing a similar situation.

“However, this workshop has taught us some of the concepts that we can follow to help students love maths,” Ms Cokanauto said.

“Before we were focused on teaching what was provided to us in writing. Now after this workshop we can go an extra mile to help students understand maths.

“Mathematics is an important subject and it is something that the students have to learn till Year 13. So most of the ground work by lower class teachers needed to be done properly so that teachers in higher classes do not struggle.”

The four-day workshop ended yesterday.
