A Cakaudrove man was yesterday sentenced to 11 years imprisonment by the Labasa Magistrates Court for two drug related convictions.

Petero Yavala was convicted with one count each of possession of illicit drugs and cultivation of illicit drugs by Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon.

The court heard that on February 3, 2012, Yavala was found carrying four kilograms of marijuana while travelling in a taxi along Seaqaqa Road.

He was also charged for unlawfully cultivating 32 plants of marijuana in Naweni, Savusavu. Magistrate Thennakoon sentenced Yavala to five years for the first count.

He determined four years for possessing the drugs, two more years for aggravating factors and reduced one year for good behaviour and other mitigating factors.

For the second count, Magistrate Thennakoon sentenced Yavala to six years imprisonment. He classified Yavala as a large scale farmer which he ruled for five years, added another two years for aggravating factors and reduced one year for previous good behaviour and other mitigating factors.

Yavala’s final sentence of a total of 11 years which he was to serve a period of seven years and six month before he was eligible for parole, Magistrate Thennakoon said.

He has been given 28 days to appeal.
