Manslaughter Trial Date Set For 5

A trial will start on Monday, May 8, for five people charged with the manslaughter of a 36-year-old man.

The case was called before Judge Justice Vincent Perera at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

The five charged are Sekope Toduadua (father), James Netani, Josese Rainima Tawake, Netani Takelo and Sekope Sivoduadua Toduadua (son).

State prosecution lawyer, Jullen Fatiaki told the court that she will be presenting nine witnesses in the case.

She further stated that she could not locate the surgeon who had attended to the deceased, Savenaca Masi.

It is alleged that on November 26, 2014, at Nadonumai in Lami, the five killed Masi.

Defence lawyer, Priya Lal who is representing Toduadua (father) and Tawake told the court that the deceased was admitted in hospital in a coma for two months.

She further stated that they are challenging the cause of death.

Netani is represented by Christina Choy, Takelo is represented by Swarvana Prakesh and Toduadua (son) is represented by Aarti Prakesh.

Ms Lal said that according to the medical certificate the cause of death was due to serious traumatic injuries.
