Seventy-eight year-old Chandramma had tears in her eyes as she held on tightly to her renewed agriculture lease with one hand and while the other held onto the arm of her eldest son.

She was lost for words receiving her with the new 99 year lease for her eight acre sugar cane farm in Votua, Ba.

Chandramma has been keeping a close eye on her son, 62-year-old Balram who has been suffering from heart problems, but could not go for surgery because their family could not afford to.

Chandramma was one of 43 farmers from Ba who received the renewed leases from Minister for Lands, Faiyaz Koya yesterday.

The family had settled on that land in 1998 after moving from Ba where her late husband, Shiu Narayan worked for the Public Works Department.

Along with her five children she began a new life as a sugar cane farmer and received a 30 year lease for the land.

“We are very grateful to Government for what they have done and now my children, grandchildren and future generations can call this home,” she said.

“But I am so worried about Balram as he needs help and he is the main person behind the farm and I really want to see him well again,” she said.

Mr Balram said the new lease has given them some peace of mind knowing the future of their land is secured.
