A writing competition organised by the Fiji Media Watch was officially launched on Wednesday night coinciding with the celebration of World Press Freedom Day on May 3.

Launched by award-winning local writer, Mary Rokonadravu, she said the main goal of the competition was to get Fijians to talk about their personal opinions and learnings through a positive platform.

“The same goes for journalists who share personal stories through the life of a mentor who has guided and helped their growth,” Ms Rokonadravu said.

She also said they wanted to hear from ordinary citizens by providing them a platform to share what critical thinking means to them through the appreciation for a named journalist.

Members of the public gathered at the launch held at the St Joseph’s Secondary School Hall in Suva.

The competition is divided into categories of various age groups (Thank a Journalist) with a separate one for current and former journalists (Thank a Mentor).

Competition closes on June 30 (Friday) which will be followed by an awards event on July 14 (Friday).

The theme was ‘World Press Freedom Day 2017: say ‘Thank You!’ to a Journalist or a Mentor (FIJI).
