Oil leaks of hydraulics and diesel fuel from the sunken cargo vessel, MV Southern Phoenix, at the Suva harbour has been classified as “minor” by the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL).

This was established through the preliminary assessments on Saturday. The cargo ship which sank on Saturday morning was loaded with heavy fuel oil of 183 metric tonnes and medium diesel oil of 30 metric tonnes for shipment to Tarawa, Kiribati.

The FPCL classified the seepage as not a major threat to the environment. But the divers from Dive Centre Fiji and Fijian Navy continue to undertake assessments to further ascertain any possibility of major oil spill.

FPCL revealed the details of the cargo on board the vessel which belonged to Cruz Holdings Limited.

Identified were the following:

  • Heavy fuel oil of 1 metric tonnes
  • Medium diesel oil 30 metric tonnes
  • 179 containers
  • Break bulk cargo and other cargo

“FPCL in collaboration with Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has deployed oil spill equipment on the scene to mitigate any possible oil spill or damage to the environment,” the FPCL stated.

All floating loose cargo has been secured and confined to the South end while salvage operations by the vessel owner has begun.

Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the sinking of the cargo ship.

Yesterday, the vessels owners confirmed that they have activated their tugs and barges to collect all the containers and other items floating in the harbour.
