Bus Operators Make Travel Easy In Labasa

The three bus companies affected by the single lane Labasa Bridge now have a loading and unloading zone opposite the Labasa Court House.

Dalip Chand and Sons Limited, Northern Buses Limited and Parmod Enterprises Limited providing service to people going to Labasa Hospital and beyond this route and the road along Fiji Sugar Corporation and further, no longer park at the Labasa Bus Stand.

Fiji Bus Operators Association president Parmod Chand said following a stakeholders’ meeting called by Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea, the bus companies decided to operate from a temporary location.

“More than 50 per cent of people in Vanua Levu are affected by the partial closure of the bridge by Fiji Roads Authority,” Mr Chand said.

“During the meeting prior to this repair and maintenance work carried out we suggested alternative ways to ease traffic congestion.

“Hence, the bus companies decided to use the parking area available opposite the Labasa Court House to help passengers reach their destination on time.

“We hope alternative options can be taken on board so that traffic congestion will not become a chronic issue for the public and motorists.”

Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer John Hutchinson said the FRA wishes to apologise for the short-term inconvenience but this was for a long-term improvement.

“A half bridge closure has been in place from May 1 to 17 and a full bridge closure will be on May 14 from 2am to 6am,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“The urgent repairs work includes strengthening beams, relocating railings on downstream side of bridge and repairing any unforeseen defects that may arise during the course of this repair works.”

The work is expected to finish before Fiji Sugar Corporation Labasa Mill opens for the crushing season.
