Fisheries Minister and Oceans Champion Semi Koroilavesau is calling for a national effort to clean up our oceans as we head to the United Nations Oceans Conference next month in New York.

While his ministry has started the campaign whereby every Wednesday his staff will clean up the foreshore around the country, Mr Koroilavesau is calling on all Fijians to take the initiative.

He explains that people are taking issues related to our oceans very lightly.

Fiji is co-hosting the conference with Sweden and is playing the lead role in calling for this conference to focus on the Sustainable Development Goal 14 which deals specifically with safeguarding our oceans.

Mr Koroilavesau yesterday briefed Cabinet about the countdown to the conference which starts on June 5 in New York.

While urging other Government agencies to come on board, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has suggested that a national campaign be organised.

Mr Koroilavesau said: “We need to get our communities involved in the efforts to assist ridding of plastics on our shores and on land including public areas. This will also create awareness among our people especially our youth who could become champions in their areas or communities.

“Our rural communities normally dump rubbish into rivers and we need to get out of this habit. This rubbish dumped into the rivers will finally end up in the ocean. Plastic will be broken up into small particles and eaten by fish. It is the same fish that ends up on our dinner tables.”
