A team of 25 Republic of Fiji Navy personnel guided an American registered yacht, Paw Paw to safety after it experienced engine issues last Sunday night.

The Navy also used a Nothern Air aircraft with two of its officers aboard to help locate the yacht.

The yacht had left New Zealand to come here when it experienced engine problems and steering failure.

It drifted and was located Southwest off Kadavu.

Operations officer Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Timoci Natuva said they received a distress call from the Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) New Zealand last Sunday afternoon.

“On Monday Republic of Fiji Military Ship Kula guided a yacht…after receiving a call from RCC NZ with regards to a yacht that encountered problems about 50 km southwest of Kadavu,” Lieutenant Commander Natuva said.

The RFN, he said were aware of the unfavourable weather conditions because of the one cyclone in the West and another in the East and had prepared their team well.

“But they managed to rectify some of their problems in particular with their engines so they started to move up slowly with Kula coming to assist.

Kula managed to meet up with the yacht and clarify what they wanted.”

He said they managed to track the yacht, thanks to a mobile network which he did not reveal.
