Close traditional ties between the people of Ra and the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s village were witnessed during the traditional welcome ceremony on Monday.

Mr Bainimarama was chief guest at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Rakiraki new market complex. He addressed the people of Ra as “qase” (elder) during the ceremony.

Explaining later, 58-year-old Malakai Waqatabu, of Raiwasa Village said the traditional link was very strong and the people of Ra would always listen to him.

“In the early days, some of our people went and settled in Kiuva Village, Tailevu, which is also the Prime Minister’s village,” Mr Waqatabu said.

The retired Public Works Department worker said if the people of Ra were his qase (elders) through traditional links, the reciprocal respect would be high.
