A unit of the Republic of Fiji Navy has conducted a mini survey to locate the containers from the sunken cargo ship, MV Southern Phoenix, at Suva Harbour.

Operations Officer Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Timoci Natuva said its Fiji Hydrographic Services was conducting the survey.

He confirmed however that the data remained in its raw stages.

“All we have now is raw data of the mini survey that was done because we need to verify and correct that data before we give that to relevant authorities for assistance,” Lieutenant Commander Natuva said.

Since Saturday the Fijian Navy had assisted in the security of the container cargo products from being taken by anyone from other boats.

“We were on stand-by in case MSAF or FPCL requested our help,” he said.

The Fijian Navy responded to a request from MSAF at 3:30am on Saturday.

“On Saturday our divers were requested to assist in clearing the Princess Wharf and parts of Kings Wharf to ensure there were no containers submerged that could be dangerous to navigation,” he said.

“Our divers managed to mark two containers and cleared the Princess Wharf.

“We had the members from the Hydrographic Services who drew lines and did the resurvey of the containers and their locations.”
