Fifty-year-old Vijayanti Mala Naidu was among 20 people who were sworn in as Commissioners of Oath at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

Elated with another milestone achievement, Mrs Naidu, who is representing the Lautoka district, said this was her third achievement.

“It’s my passion to give my service to the country and this is my third achievement as I am also a Justice of Peace and a Registered Marriage Celebrant,” said Mrs Naidu.

Her husband, Krishna Naidu, shared her excitement and encouraged her to pursue her career in serving the community.

Chief Justice Anthony Gates reminded the newly-appointed commissioners to have a willing attitude to serve the people.

He said: “As new Commissioners you have generously volunteered to serve the public in this capacity.

“Persons may seek your help at inconvenient times and you must show the right attitude of willingness to serve.

“What we are referring to here is now called ‘access to justice’.”

Chief Justice Gates said we needed more women as commissioners as they carry out their functions readily, swiftly and with efficiency.

“Some of you may recommend such a candidate for consideration, that is, a conscientious person with a sense of responsibility who will readily serve the public and who possesses a helpful attitude,” he said.
