A total of 15 containers from the sunken cargo vessel, MV Southern Phoenix, have been removed from Suva Harbour.

This includes four tanktainers – an intermodal container for the transport of liquids, gases and powders as bulk cargo.

According to the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), salvage teams continue to strategically remove containers from the site. Cranes from Ports of Suva are being used to recover the containers.

Two pollution experts arrived on Thursday from Maritime New Zealand (MNZ).

They are here to help MSAF response team prepare for any major oil spill which may occur from the submerged Southern Phoenix.

MSAF chief executive Jone Tunidau said: “MSAF held an emergency meeting with the New Zealand Embassy officials and requested the facilitation of assistance from MNZ as a precautionary measure with Tropical Cyclone Ella approaching.

“MSAF has also put its oil spill equipment from Lautoka on standby.”

The equipment are ready to be mobilised in full response in collaboration with Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) and other stakeholders, should a tier III (national and international) response be required.

In the meantime, the area around the submerged cargo ship remains contained by the oil spill booms and minor leakages have been cleaned and pose no threat to the marine environment.
