Biotech Limited believes that the shortage of planting materials are the main drawback for increasing production in food security and the increasing national economy through the agriculture sector.

This was based on a feasibility study done with other stakeholders.

According to them, Biotech Limited is the first business in the South Pacific to offer disease free high quality planting materials through commercial tissues culture operations.

They are in partnership with Market Development Facility to develop its technical capacity (lab and nursery) towards commercial production and promotion of tissue cultured planting materials via demonstration plots and farmer field days.

They aim at supplying clean and high quality planting materials to enable consistent production in terms of higher yielding crops that can meet the quality required for exports.

Scientist Eliki Lesione said their products mainly confined to those plants that may be difficult to propagate using seeds.

“We look at supplying higher quantities at least 1000 materials at a time, because of this, we can supply to the whole of Fiji.

“We mainly focus on exportable crops like Tausala, cavendish banana, ginger, tumeric and others based on demand by the customer,” he said.

He added that they are still testing new concepts which has been generating more interests from exporters and farmers.

They focus mainly on supplying tissue planting material to the exporter of fresh dalo, ginger and banana outlets in Fiji.

“We are still working on increasing our stock to a level when there is a great demand we can be able to supply all year round with any volume by any exporter or even by the Ministry of Agriculture,” said Mr Lesione

Biotech Limited has plans on propagating orchids and anthuriums soon.

The $500,000 investment was established last year

Their lab and nursery is located at Lot 6 Wainibuku Road, Nakasi.
