The registration of water committees for four villages of Nailega district in Tailevu has been acknowledged by the Water Authority of Fiji chief executive officer, Opetaia Ravai.

“The main message that WAF takes to all villages within the 14 provinces is, ‘Form your Water Committee and register it with WAF,’ Mr Ravai said.

“I am pleased to see that our message is being heard.”

The villages of Wailevu, Naibita, Nailega and Naibulini took the first steps to address their water supply problems when they registered their committees on May 3.

Once registration is completed and all requirements have been met, it will be possible for WAF to sign contracts with each water committee to supply labour for their respective water supply projects, and then be properly remunerated for their work.

“This system provides payment to water committees,” Mr Ravai said.

“It empowers them to be responsible for ongoing maintenance and repairs, to ensure the future sustainability of their water supply systems.”

Nailega District Council representative Orisi Lutunaivalu of Naibita Village, worked with the four village headmen to form their respective committees.

He then organised the trip to Suva for the headmen of the three villages of Naibita, Nailega and Naibulini Villages and the chairperson of the Wailevu Village Development Committee to register their water committees with WAF.

This followed Mr Lutunaivalu’s discussions with WAF Rural and Maritime Schemes public relations officer, Maika Nagalu, during the Tailevu Provincial Council meeting last month.

Mr Nagalu said that in his experience it was the first time four village water committees were registered at the same time, thanks to the great effort by Mr Lutunaivalu.
