The Australian Indigenous team will use the Digicel/Punjas International Netball Schools Challenge to expose their players when the competition starts on Tuesday at the Vodafone Arena.

“For a lot of the girls this is their first time being out of Australia and competing in such a tournament so this is a unique experience for them,” coach Renee Palise said.

“We are really excited to play teams like New Zealand and Fiji, those girls are bigger and stronger and it will really toughen our girls up.

“We really want the girls to learn things while they are here, they will be playing against girls who are much older and experienced.

“So we just want to get the girls to learn things so they can take it back to their communities and help the younger ones.

“Giving the girls game time at this level is a very important because it gives them the necessary skills they need.”

Palise said the players come from all over Australia and the competition is a good way to get the girls together playing as a team.

“Preparations have been really good, we haven’t actually been together as a team since January so these first few days will be excellent for us to get together and play as a proper team,” she said.

“So this is a breath of fresh air for the girls and they are really excited, we are slowly getting back into being a team and communicating as one and getting to know each other.

“The morale among the girls is high, I think by the end of the competition these girls would have developed some good friendship.”

The Digicel/Punjas International Netball Schools Challenge will begin on Tuesday at the Vodafone Arena.
