Her interest in learning the Chinese language has paid off for 20-year-old Diana Botei.

Now she will represent Fiji at the Chinese Bridge competition next month.

The Chinese Bridge is a Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students on their mastery of the Chinese language, promoted to establish a plan to introduce Chinese to the world.

Ms Botei has been studying Mandarin Chinese for three semesters and wanted to challenge herself to learn more about the language, culture, and the lifestyle

“I’m so happy in the sense that I’ve made those who’ve believed in me proud, such as my teachers, family, and friends,” said Ms Botei.

She is a third year USP student based in Lautoka, majoring in tourism management and International business marketing.

It will be her first trip to China and is looking forward to seeing and experiencing the beauty of China and meeting other competitors from around the world.

She won during the preliminaries at USP’s Confucius Institute at the Laucala Campus on April 29, and will be accompanied by runner up, Archana Pritika Mala to China.

All travel costs including accommodation and air tickets will be paid for by Hanban, the Confucius Institute headquarters in China.

Director of the Confucius Institute in USP, Yang Hui said they had been organising the event since the establishment of the Institute in 2012, and which had seen more than 10 candidates travelling to China for the final competition.

The final competition will be held for 15 days in Changsha, Hunan Province, China.
