FSC Working With Farmers To Boost Sugar Production, Targets 10 Tonnes Hectare

The Fiji Sugar Corporation is working with cane farmers to help produce 10 tonnes per hectare this harvesting season.

FSC board chairperson Vishnu Mohan said: “What we are working on now is how best we can help them (farmers) get 10 tonnes per hectare.”

Mr Mohan said they were looking towards that improvement and to reduce the cost by $10 per tonne.

These would lead to improvements in the cane payment and better result for FSC, he said.

The FSC is aiming to get two million tonnes of cane and produce 200,000 tonnes of sugar.

He said the focus was cane production at a low cost efficiency.

Mr Mohan said it’s a huge task and there was no time to waste.

With only a few weeks left before Mills to open, farmers have been asked to prepare themselves for the harvest.

Fiji Cane Growers Council chief executive officer Sundresh Chetty said farmers should start having their gang meetings as well.

He has asked the farmers to also submit their Memorandum of Gang Agreement (MOGA) forms to their sector offices as soon as possible.

FSC is also looking at strongly revamping the rail system and utilise its efficiencies.

Mr Mohan said: “There was a time we had 70 per cent of cane transported by rail now it is 20 per cent so we are going to revamp the rail system.”
