Investment in culture especially in the language is vital, says Fiji Rotuman Association chairperson Paserio Furivai.

Mr Furivai said this as Rotumans and the world over observed Rotuma Day. He was speaking at Furnival Park in Toorak, Suva yesterday.

“Getting together every year is very important for us because we get to revive our culture and we engage our children in poetry, chanting, songs, and dance,” he said.

“About 2000 people live on Rotuma while 10,000 Rotumans live in Suva and half of those living in Suva don’t speak the language.”

There are seven districts in Rotuma.

“It’s amazing to see the large crowd turnout today especially the young people and I’m very happy with the turnout,” he said.

He hoped they would continue to be interested in functions as such, he said.

Yesterday’s theme was: ‘Row forward Rotuma a New Era Dawns’.
