Today marks a special day for families around the world – a day to officially recognise the contribution of our Mothers in our lives and to society as a whole; a day to celebrate motherhood and all the love, joy, hardships and challenges that come with it.

In celebrating this occasion we must also pay regard to those Mothers who may have lost their children and also to those Mothers who may have left us.  We must also pay regard to the continuous call to make this world a better society for our mothers. A world that is attuned to the unique challenges that women face in terms of inequality and disempowerment; a world that respects the rights of mothers and women generally.

For our nation, let today be an awakening call for all Fijian children, both young and adult, to respect our mothers and to give them that care and protection that they nurtured us with.

It is heartbreaking to see a growing number of mothers in the care of the State in our old-age care facilities and also on the streets of our cities and towns.  Their stories bear the heartache of a bond lost when the child becomes materially independent or merely indifferent to the challenges of looking after their own mothers.

Over the years, Mothers’ Day, like every other internationally celebrated day has adopted a commercial angle.  It is a day when we lavish our mothers with gifts, flowers and cards.  In doing this let’s not let the day overshadow the real essence and spirit of Mothers’ Day – a celebration of life, love and caregiving which must be a constant beacon in a child’s life.  A beacon which is not stifled by the struggles of life or by the arrogance of independence and self-sufficiency. A beacon which is a consistent reminder of the unending and unconditional nature of a mother’s love.  Let that nature of a mother’s love be the barometer of our own love for our mothers.

Let’s give our mothers the invaluable gift of our time and attention today and every day in tune with the endless gift of motherhood.  And in that spirit, let today urge us on as children to continuously remember that it is when we don’t need our mothers anymore that they need us the most.

Happy Mothers’ Day to all Mothers.
