Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been highly praised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for his presidency and leadership towards COP23.

The Prime Minister was acknowledged by IMF’s managing director Christine Lagarde at the Belt and Road Forum for International Co-operation in Beijing, China, yesterday.

During their meeting Ms Lagarde congratulated Fiji’s leadership on COP23 saying that climate change was indeed a major challenge for small island states.

Mr Bainimarama, who joins leaders from around the world, leads the Fijian Government delegation at the forum.

The forum officially began yesterday and looks into strengthening the trade and people’s relations between China and her traditional trade countries that once formed the ‘Silk Road’ trade routes.

Mr Bainimarama is one of the 29 Heads of States and Governments at the forum and delivered statements on ‘Connectivity Cooperation for Interconnected Development’ and; on ‘People to People Bond’.

The Forum focuses on strengthening old relations and aims to open and develop existing relations with other countries including small developing states like Fiji.

The Prime Minister will hold talks with China’s President Xi Jinping and with other senior government officials during his stay.

He is expected to leave China for Bonn, Germany, after the Forum for a COP23 meeting. The forum ends today.
