Christians usually refer to the opening chapters of Genesis of the Holy Bible when they talk about work. God was talking to Adam, the first man, in the Garden of Eden as recorded in Genesis, the first book of the Holy Bible.

He told Adam and I quote in Genesis chapter 3 verse 19:

“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

What it meant was that from Adam down through the ages to today,  people would work for their living. This commandment has not been rescinded.

Basically, what it means is that we have to work to survive in this world.

We have to be independent and become self reliant. It also says that one day we will die.

The Apostle Paul writing to the Galatians in Galatians chapter 6 verses 3 and four said:

3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

Work empowers people and gives them self esteem.

Also in the new Testament of the Holy Bible in James chapter 2 verse 17 it says: “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”

We may express our feeling that we believe in something but if our deeds do not reflect that then that faith is dead.

We can pray to God and ask him to bless us but if we do not do the necessary work associated with our pleadings we could be waiting for a long time for things to come to us.

The concept of work is both temporal and spiritual. Work is a fundamental principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ his followers believe. An understanding of this concept will help us to avoid idleness because idleness is the tool of the devil.

Negative thoughts usually come to those who are idle. That is why unemployment is linked to crime.

It is often said that those who work hard have nothing to be ashamed of.

Mortality studies have shown that those who work have lower death rates than those who are retired, no matter the age of those at retirement.

Those who work hard, take care of themselves and their families have a healthier and more positive outlook of life.

When we work hard we develop habits that lead to stronger work ethic.

We grow closer to our families when we provide for them and teach them to take responsibility as well. And because we know we are doing all we can, we feel ourselves progress, and we engage with life. Work is central to God’s plan for us on this world.

It brings joy and happiness. Because of its divine purpose the benefits of work are many.

When I talk about work I don’t mean paid jobs only. I am talking about voluntary and humanitarian work.

There are so many things that need to be done in our communities. For those who are retired this is a wonderful opportunity to avail of your time, wealth and experience.

We can all help people in need to help themselves by teaching them the concept of work and self reliance. In many of our communities there is vacant unproductive land. There is an urgent need for leadership and assistance to develop this land to bring economic benefits.

The indiscriminate dumping of non biodegradable rubbish is a major national concern. Again it requires someone or some people to lead the way, like Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau on starting a campaign to keep our foreshores and oceans clean.

Voluntary work is not only confined to those who have retired but to our unemployed young people. While hunting for jobs they could engage in voluntary work and gain experience which will enhance their CVs also.

And when they secure a job, they should protect it by their conduct and work ethic. A job is a job. In the competitive job environment everyone must start somewhere unless you have a qualification and work experience that is much sought after like doctors.

Imagine if many of us, those who are physically able to work, are working in one form or another on our own initiative instead of waiting for Government assistance, it would transform the country.

We would become a more positive and happier people.
