To recognise the effort, love and sacrifice made by mothers, Prem Saath Sang Mahila Mandal, organised a Mother’s Day celebration yesterday at Waiqele, Labasa.

Inviting mothers from different faiths and background, the group served them a special lunch, presented gifts and performed a drama.

Prem Saath Sang Mahila Mandal president Leela Devi said they have been doing this for five years.

“We want mothers to know that we value them and appreciate for all they have done for the group, family and community as a whole,” Mrs Devi said.

“At the same time we want our young generation to see what we are doing so that they can continue to do the same work.

“We have to teach our children to value their mothers because later we don’t want anyone to say they regret for not treating their mothers well. Also we don’t want to hear mothers suffering and their relationship with children is bitter.”

Among the group was a 92-year-old great-great-grandmother, Lakh Pati of Batinikama, Labasa.

“I am very happy to be a mother of three daughters, grandmother of 16 children, great grandmother of 10 children and great great grandmother of one child,” Ms Pati said while clapping her hands.

“God has blessed me with good health and it is my prayer to God to bless mothers with good children who can look after them in old age.”

Rosalia Amele, 65, of Dogoru outside Labasa Town, was also among the mothers who were part of the special treat.

“I feel very happy to be recognised by this group,” Ms Amele said.

“Mother’s day is very special and we mothers always look forward to it.”

Meanwhile, Tuatua Baal Ramayan Mandali offered a special lunch treat to the resident of Senior Citizens Home in Labasa.
