It was a proud moment for Salesh Kumar, 53, when he received the Best Farmer Award yesterday.

He was among 50 farmers who graduated with a Certificate II in Production Horticulture at the Vivekananda Technical Centre, Ramakrishna Mission, Malolo, in Nadi.

He also received a bag of fertiliser and fertiliser pump sprayer.

Mr Kumar, who has spent 31 years in sugarcane farming, said: “I was not able to earn that much to meet my income to support my family. I then moved to vegetable farming. I am happy that I am a vegetable farmer because I work on my farm every day and also make a good amount of profit.”

Mr Kumar said his entire family worked on the farm to plant vegetables and sell them. He lives with his family in Nawaicoba, Nadi.

“I would like to thank the Ramakrishna Mission for their support towards my farming,” he said.

Permanent Secretary for Agriculture Jitendra Singh said: “Agriculture has been and will continue to be the backbone of our economy as it plays a pivotal role in the development, growth and stability of our nation.

“The non-cane sector itself contributes around eight per cent to Fiji Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs around 70 per cent of the workforce.

“I encourage you graduates not to stop here but to continue your training to Certificate III and IV in order to equip yourselves with the latest knowledge in farming.”
