For Bua Urban Youth representative, Alisi Nacewa, representing Fiji is an important event not only for the country, but the Pacific as well.

Ms Nacewa, who is a passionate environment advocate, will be part of the Fijian delegation to the Ocean Conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA, from June 5 to 9.

“We are very appreciative to the Government for allowing a youth and community voice to be part be part of their delegation,” she said.

“It’s such a huge opportunity for Fiji and the Pacific because this links to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 that was lobbied by Small Island Developing States (SIDs) to be an SDG on its own, and it was successful.

“Our oceans are our lives in the Pacific, and we need to be talking at local and global level not only on how it needs to be used sustainably, but also how we should stop polluting it and clean up all the rubbish we have put in it for decades.”

Ms Nacewa said even before representing Fiji at the World Oceans Conference, “we must first actively engage in the consultative processes in the country.

“We want to ensure that youths, women, and indigenous voices are represented at the conference,” she said.

She is not only a member of the Bua Urban Youth group, but also Fiji’s Programme Co-ordinator for the Coral Reef Alliance organisation.

She is looking forward to the summit.
