New Skills to Add to Curriculum

There is a need to accommodate problem-solving skills, civic and citizenship education and team work within curriculum.
The Permanent Secretary for Education, Heritage and Arts, Iowane Tiko made these remarks during the opening ceremony of a week-long programme.
The programme was on generic and life skills for lifelong teaching and learning in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at Suva Technical College in Nabua.
He said in Fiji, a policy had been formulated for effective delivery to TVET programmes.
“This policy applies to all institutions delivering TVET courses and curriculum.
“It takes technology education and training as an important component of education which emphasises that educating the people should be holistic in nature and proposes the inclusion of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) four important pillars of education; learning to know, learning to be, learning to do and learning to live together.
“The economic, social and educational scenery of our global society is gradually changing and these changes are likely to impact the generic work-related skills needed to be provided in the education system,” Mr Tiko said.
