A 70-year-old man is admitted in the Labasa Hospital following an accident on Friday night near the Labasa Holy Family Parish Catholic Church.

The victim, at the time of the accident, was using a zebra crossing, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said.

This is the second incident recorded this year at the same crossing.

A 90-year-old man also had an accident there earlier in the year. He recovered a week later.

Fiji Sun took a picture of the zebra crossing yesterday and noted that there were lights there before, but those lights have been removed.

They have been replaced with a zebra crossing sign placed just metres from the crossing. A T-junction is located across from the Catholic Church.

Labasa’s special administrator, Vijay Chand, yesterday referred all queries concerning the matter to the Fiji Roads Authority. The authority’s representative in the North, Rupeni Oli, said he could not comment and requested that these queries be emailed to their headquarters.

Ms Naisoro has confirmed the vehicle that bumped the victim was driven by a 48-year-old man.

“The pedestrian suffered injuries and is now admitted under observation in the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Labasa Hospital,” she said.

“The accident happened around 6:30pm. The driver will be brought in for questioning as investigation continues.”
