844 students from 44 schools for National Schools Championship
About 844 swimmers from 44 schools around the country will be taking part in the National Schools Swimming Championship at Damodar Aquatic Centre in Suva on Friday.
National Schools Swimming Association (NSSA) president Patrick Bower said yesterday there is an increase in the number of students participating in the competition.
“There will be twenty seven primary schools and seventeen secondary schools participating in this year’s event,” he said.
“We’ve been greatly encouraged by the entries that have come in and we’ve submitted the final registration list of students before the deadline.
“There will be an early start on Friday as there is a a large number of students participating in the competition.”
Bower is expecting a tough competition as students are vying to make the qualifying times for the national finals.
“The championship is targeted towards students improving on their swimming time and skill as they are expected to make a standard time for the national finals.
“We’re expecting a two hectic day of competition which will be live streamed internationally and also to the rest of the Pacific. Students are looking forward to the event.
“There are schools coming from the west namely Mount Saint Mary who have featured prominently in this competition for the past three years.
“We’re also grateful to the Fiji Sports Council who has provided us the facilities for the event and looking forward to a healthy competition.
“I like to encourage the public and the families of the participants to come and support them as they have put in a lot of hard work and commitment for the competition,” Bower added.
