Agreement Helps Local Govt Capacity

A Memorandum of Understanding which focuses on building capacity for our towns and cities was signed yesterday between the Fijian Government and the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) Pacific.
Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala said the MOU singing is a major leap towards partnering and building stronger capacities within the Local Government.
“This MOU will provide useful opportunities for our towns and cities and the local government in strengthening of governance, service quality and delivery.
“Multiple programmes that support leadership and strategic guidance would be rolled out through this partnership,” Mr Bala said.
CLGF works with national and local government and other stakeholders in the Pacific region to strengthen local democracy, institutions and service delivery capacity.
The CLGF Pacific Office is based in Suva and has partnered with the UN Women in implementing activities in its Markets for Change Project in Fiji focusing on 10 councils in the country.
CLGF regional director Karibaiti Taoaba said they will work with the Local Government ministry to strengthen capacity building for the municipal councils through training and knowledge sharing.
The MOU sets out that the Ministry and the CLGF continue to strengthen partnership and undertake joint activities in meetings, workshops, technical exchange and strengthen local Government service delivery capacity in Fiji.
