The next stage of the Naboro Landfill project is expected to commence soon.

This was confirmed by the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Parveen Bala in Parliament yesterday.

During the 2016-2017 budget, he said $4.2 million was allocated to the ministry for the waste management, out of which $3.3 million was given for the project.

Another $50,000, Mr Bala said was allocated for the waste transfer station.

“My ministry has successfully completed a thorough tender process for the Naboro Landfill Project. The project is about to commence,” he said.

Once completed, Mr Bala added the new Naboro Stage Two cell would provide an air space that would receive waste from the greater Suva area for a period of two years.

The ministry, he said also facilitated the preliminary works for the establishment of a waste transfer (transit station).

He said the station would primarily assist the councils in the greater Suva area through providing efficient and consistent garbage collecting services by acting as a transit point between collection sites and final disposal site at the Naboro Landfill.
