Climate smart agriculture is the way forward for Fiji, says the Deputy Secretary for Agricultural Development Uraia Waibuta.

And while highlighting the 2017 Northern Agriculture Show theme at Subrail Park in Labasa, Mr Waibuta said this system of agriculture ensured food security and at the same time addressed climate change.

“Climate smart agriculture is an integrative approach to address interlinked challenges of food security and climate change,” Mr Waibuta said.

“Before 2050, the global population is expected to swell to more than 9.7 billion people (United Nations 2015). At the same time, global food consumption trends are changing drastically, for example, increasing affluence is the driving demand for meat-rich diets.

“If the current trends in consumption patterns and food waste continue, it is estimated we will require 60 per cent more food production by 2050. Climate smart agriculture helps to improve food security for the poor and marginalised, an important initiative to help reduce food wastage globally.”

Mr Waibuta added in their attempt to improve food production, they encouraged people to move towards modernising the agriculture sector.

“The modernisation plan aims at increasing yields per unit area for both crops and livestock produced. The plan will involve the introduction of improved technologies such as mechanisation, high yielding varieties, suitable equipment and structures that will allow farming to become more attractive, especially for our younger generation,” he added.

“The modernisation will be implemented in such a sustainable manner, taking into account the limited available agricultural land and its future generation.”
