The Fijian and Indian governments yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (CEIT) in Suva.

Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and the Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, General (Ret’d) Vijay Kumar Singh signed the MOU.

Mr Singh said the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), which was a premier Government of India undertaking in the IT sphere, would be implementing the CEIT project.

“Establishment of CEIT will further pave the way for establishment of Pan Pacific Islands tele-medicine and tele-education network as committed by the Indian Prime Minister,” he said.

While delivering his welcome address to Mr Singh and his delegation, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said India was the world’s largest democracy and one of the leading powers on the global stage.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said India’s vision for the future and its work in development extended far beyond its borders and those in the Pacific deeply value their engagement with the Indian government.

He said India had worked generously and thoughtfully to develop our economy, our people and deliver services, a security for our people.

And all the assistance had been given in respect of our individual sovereignty and spirit of equality.

He said India and Pacific Island nations had achieved much together and look forward to more discussions in the coming days as  the countries deepen the ties that connect us, explore areas and help each other realise  the Pacific Islands full potential as individual nations.

It is also understood that a Memorandum of Agreement on Sustainable Renewable Energy Co-operation, an MOA on Youth Development Corporation and an MOA between Prasar Bharti Broadcasting Corporation of India and the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation were signed last night.
