FHH maintenance crews are monitoring and reporting on any significant activity

Drivers and vehicle owners travelling through the newly-built bypass bridge at Naiyalayala, on the south-coast road in Taveuni, are advised to abide by legal weight restrictions.

Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) Savusavu Depot manager, Solomone Nabete said that onsite maintenance crews were monitoring traffic and would report significant occurrences with the Fiji Roads Authority.

FHH is contracted by Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to implement its maintenance programme to provide road access in the Central, Northern and Eastern divisions.

“Our maintenance crews are monitoring and reporting on any significant activity, which is then forwarded to FRA for further deliberation before we undertake repairs,” Mr Nabete said.

Naiyalayala Bridge, which serves around 2000 people in Vuna and Navakawau villages and nearby resorts was closed last month because of corroding marks on the base and top of the main beams.

The temporary bridge included a backfill to stabilise pavements access, installations of four nearly 10-metre long culverts, and construction of riprap wall alongside the bypass to prevent degrading fill material.

Mr Nabete said while the site is exposed to both tide and flooding “the pavement has been constructed to ensure stability.”

The bypass was built to allow repair works on the main bridge which, however, is yet to start.

Arrangements, he added, were underway for the transportation of I-beams from Suva, which are steel beams used for bridge support.
