Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says Fiji’s presidency at COP23 in Bonn, Germany in November this year is a matter of pride for the Pacific region.

Mr Modi relayed this message as he sent his well-wishes on the occasion of India-Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Conference currently underway at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

“Fiji’s presidency of COP23 is both a matter of pride for the region as well as an assertion of the importance of sustainable development for the Pacific countries,” he said.

Mr Modi said over the past few years, relations between India and Pacific Island countries had grown closer than they have ever been before.

“I myself have very pleasant memories of my visit to this region in 2014 and when we held the first Forum for India and the Pacific Island Countries (FIPIC) II in New Delhi and Jaipur the following year.

“We had then agreed on areas of co-operation in sustainable development, renewable energy, and disaster risk reduction, health care and blue economy.”

He said Fiji’s presidency of COP23 was both a matter of pride for the region as well as an assertion of the importance of sustainable development for the Pacific countries.

The India-Pacific Sustainable Development Conference brings together experts, policy makers, business and civil society representatives from India and the Pacific region.

“With a view to capacity building in a holistic manner in areas which India has identified in their co-operation with the Pacific region,” Mr Modi said.

“I have no doubt that over the two days of deliberations, there will not only be a better understanding of what could be some of the solutions to the challenges being faced by the region but also of the opportunities that present themselves.”
