A University of the South Pacific student was fined $2000 for criminal trespassing and damaging property by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Ratu Isikeli Nasogo Bakewa, 25, who had pleaded guilty was also bound over for two years and ordered to be on good behaviour.

Bakewa was charged with one count each of criminal trespass and damaging property.

He appeared before Magistrate Kashyapa Wickramasekara.

The court heard that on January 23, 2016, at 4.15am, Bakewa entered the property of Pradeep Chandra Lal with intent to annoy.

The case:

The court heard that on the said day, Mr Lal was woken by a loud noise and upon looking through his window, he saw Bakewa outside trying to break his daughter’s bedroom window. When Mr Lal went to his daughter’s bedroom window, he discovered that Bakewa had opened the sliding window.

The court heard that Bakewa insisted on seeing Mr Lal’s daughter, Shobna Lal.

Police prosecutor, Constable Walter Taito also told the court that Bakewa was also sentenced for one count of absconding bail earlier yesterday morning.

Magistrate Wickramasekara told Bakewa that if he honoured his two-year bound over sentence, than he would be declared to have a clean record. He was also ordered to stay away from Mr Lal and his family.
