Site preparation works for the proposed WG Friendship Plaza on MacGregor Road has begun again.

Works on site had been stopped for many months after the civil engineering works that had left a big hole in the ground with no signs of further development.

The project is spearheaded by WG International Real Estate Co. (Fiji) Limited, a locally-registered Chinese company, that had initially proposed to invest $115 million in the plaza.

The company had said construction works were supposed to have begun in December, 2014, but it was dependent on approvals from various stakeholders.

The Suva City Council had given the company the planning approval in early 2015 and was valid for two years.

This approval is mandatory for any development as required under the country’s Town and Planning Act.

However, it is understood that the company has changed its plan from the initial 19-storey proposed plaza to 30-storey building.

The Suva City Council had approved for the 19-storey plan before but now the company has lodged a new application to have an amendment to the earlier approval.

The new application is said to be currently being processed.

It is understood that the proposed new 30-storey-plan will likely include two underground floors.

The council and the company would not comment further on this project.

About the Plaza

In September 2014, we had reported that the company chief executive, Hu Xiaolong, said they would be self-financing the construction of the plaza.

The civil works was completed by CORETECH Fiji in 2014.

Mr Hu is an architect by profession and also the designer for the Friendship Plaza.

The plaza will cater for offices, apartments, a shopping mall, a five-star hotel, roof garden and parking.
