The crew on board the Royal Australian Navy vessel, HMAS Wollongong enjoyed their recent work in doing some repair work at the Suva Special School.

“ Ourselves including the Republic of Fiji Military Forces have come together to do some work at the Suva Special School and we see it  as giving back to the community and helping others who are less fortunate than us,” said Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Commander Scott Wilson said.

“So for us it is a real pleasure to be here.”

The vessel berthed at the Port of Suva earlier this week.

The team carried out painting along the school corridor and minor maintenance work with the assistance of a team from the RFMF.

Lieutenant-Commander Wilson said the Fijian Navy members observed how the Australian Navy conducted fisheries boarding party operations, with instruction on briefing techniques, weapons safety and compartment searches.

The joint Fiji/Australia training saw both navies role playing with a mock boarding operation.

The team is here on a south-west Pacific deployment mission which focuses on security capability in the region.

They have visited the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and will visit New Caledonia after their time here; before heading back to Australia.

The HMAS Wollongong departed our shores yesterday.
