A court in Australia has handed a two-year suspended sentence to a Fijian rugby league and international player for producing child abuse material.

Alipate Noilea-Tani, standout Fijian rep at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, was convicted for a count of producing child abuse material and disseminating child abuse material by New South Wales Magistrate Christopher Longley.

The 35-year-old had pleaded guilty to his charges.

Noilea-Tani has been penalised and his name listed under the Children Protection Offenders Registration list.

Magistrate Longley directed Noilea-Tani to enter into a good behaviour bond for two years pursuant to Section 9(1) of the Australian Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999. Noilea-Tani entered his sentence period from May 3, 2017 on the grounds of good behaviour and present himself before court during the bond term if required.

He has been told to accept Community Corrections Service supervision for as long as considered necessary and obey all the reasonable directions for counselling, educational development or drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Magistrate Longley has ordered Noilea-Tani to report to Community Corrections Service at Dee Why Community Corrections District Office within 7 Days.

About Noilea-Tani:

Noilea-Tani switched codes to union, playing rugby for the Telecom Fijian Warriors and was selected by the Fijian national side. After this he switched back to league and was selected for the 2009 Pacific Cup where Fiji finished third.

Later he was signed by Wests Tigers ahead of the 2011 NRL season, but then returned to Fiji without appearing for the club. He was named in the Vodafone Fijian squad for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

In May 2014, Tani played for Fiji in the 2014 Pacific Rugby League International after which in October, he played in Fiji’s clash with Lebanon in the inaugural Hayne/Mannah Cup.
