A motion for Parliament to appoint a judicial Commission of Inquiry into brutality cases by Police and military officers was shot down yesterday.

While speaking on his motion, SODELPA Opposition MP, Mosese Bulitavu told Parliament that the motion was aimed to bring people involved in inhumane acts to justice.

Mr Bulitavu said he stood in remembrance of all those who were injured and died from inhumane act allegedly carried out by Police and military officers decades ago.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the 2013 Constitution had provisions that addressed torture in Fiji.

He added it was Prime Minister Bainimarama who had the courage to address the draconian ‘buturaki’ (beating up) system’ that was once infested in the Fijian culture.

It should be understood Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that torture existed internationally in Australia, New Zealand and United States of America which had been documented.

Torture existed in autocratic and democratic societies around the world but the issues were that governments needed to find solutions and mechanisms to address the problem, he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said he agreed with Bulitavu that torture had taken place in Fiji but the people involved had been charged and sentenced.

SODELPA Opposition MP Viliame Gavoka said that if Government wanted to fully address the acts of torture then it should wipe out the draconian decrees.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum told Parliament that there were no draconian laws.
