The Fiji Roads Authority and the Government are working to put up at least 20,000 street lights across the country under the Innovative Street Light Proposal.

Recently, the FRA and the Government had released to market a call for Expressions of Interest for an innovative Street Light Proposal.

The proposal according to FRA chief executive, John Hutchinson, was a zero capital investment by the Government.

“That expression of interest has closed we are in the final stages of finalising the respondents,” Mr Hutchinson said.

He said the plan was to double the number of street lights.

“The current number of street lights we have is about 9000 around the country with that number changing every day as we put up new street lights everyday and we are looking to increase the number to 20,000,” he said.

Mr Hutchinson furthermore said 30 per cent of the lights would be LED (light-emitting diode).

In the meantime, Mr Hutchinson has stated that FRA was looking for a 12-month national contract with street light service provider.

The national contract with Prime had expired in December.

“Due to unforeseen delays we are currently in a gap with no service provider and the electricians from the MOIT are providing assistance,” he said.

So far contracts have been awarded for the places listed below with the letters of intent issued but contracts yet to be executed:

Suva, Lautoka, Tavua, Ba and Rakiraki, Savusavu and Labasa, Levuka, Nasinu and Nausori, Lami, Deuba and Navua, Nadi and Sigatoka.
