Step-dad Rapist Jailed For 13 Years

A farmer who raped his step daughter on two occasions was jailed for 13 years by the High Court in Labasa yesterday.

And the sentencing judge, Justice Paul Madigan, strongly reprimanded the man for his actions which  he said had grossly breached the victim’s trust, safety and constitutional rights.

Justice Madigan sentenced the 38-year-old man who had pleaded guilty to two counts of rape.

Charges

The first incident happened in 2015 when the victim was 13-years-old. She had moved into the man’s house with her mother who was in a relationship with him.

The second incident happened in October, 2016, when the victim was 14-years-old.

Sentence

Justice Madigan described the prevalence of rape around the country and its alarming statistics particularly with children as ‘egregious’.

He said the court has often highlighted these shocking statistics.

The accused is eligible to apply for parole after serving a minimum of 10 years imprisonment.

He was represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer, Salote Nasedra.
