Sigatoka Methodist College debutante 16-year-old Jone Foraete was taken by surprise yesterday to walk away with the Student Designer of the Year Award.

“I’m surprised because it’s my first time to take part,” the Rotuman native said.

Jone was among 49 student designers from 21 secondary schools around the country who took part at the Student Design Seminar programme which was part of the week long Fiji Fashion Week.

“My inspiration came from the movie Moana. I took inspiration from the crab shell because it’s shining and sewed some gold sequence on the dress and put on some tribal designs on it,” Jone said.

Jone credited God, his family and school for supporting him with a collection he tagged Glitz and Glam.

Chief Guest Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa said such programmes were rare in the country and thanked the Fiji Fashion Week for providing the opportunity for the youths.

“Fiji has established its very own industry in fashion, representative of our traditional styles while also being ultra-modern and fused with diverse cultures of Fiji and the region,” she said

Ms Vuniwaqa said the work that Fiji and Pacific designers displayed on the runway for the past 10 years was remarkable.

FJFW Managing Director, Ellen Whippy-Knight said it was really amazing and outstanding to see such uniqueness in the students’ designs.

“The student designer keeps increasing so maybe next year we just might have our own student fashion week,” said Ms Knight.

Natabua fielded near half of the designers with 20 while the other 29 from 21 schools including International School Suva, Adi Cakobau School, Suva Grammar School and Xavier College. Over 200 student models took part in the seminar.

Each designer showcased four pieces of attire on the runway. Students, teachers, and parents came out in numbers to support the event held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

Awards: First: Jone Foraete; Sigatoka Methodist College; second place went to Nitin  Prasad of Natabua High School and the third prize was shared by Natheniel Chand and Olivia Naivaluvou of Xavier College.

The student model of the year award was taken by Suva Grammar pupil David Cakobau.
