The Land Transport Authority is encouraging carpooling to avoid traffic congestion in urban areas.

LTA chief executive Carmine Piantedosi has reiterated that car-pooling is legal in Fiji.

“Carpooling is a legitimate option to encourage travellers to share the ride and to reduce congestion,” he said.

“Carpooling is not to be confused with the illegal soliciting of fares by illegal operators.”

The issue need to be clarified after a Lautoka salesman, Vikash Chand said, that while carpooling, he was fined by LTA officers for charging passengers.

Mr Chand said he was booked at Narara Parade, opposite Churchill Park in Lautoka. He was fined $50.

In his car was his neighbour, who carpools with him every day.

“I told the officer that I am just dropping him off, but the officer said to fine me because he believed I was charging money for carrying passengers,” Mr Chand said.

According to an LTA survey last year, more than 75 per cent of private vehicles along the heavily populated Suva-Nausori corridor during peak periods comprised of either the driver only, or just one passenger.

At that time, the survey also found that while 20 per cent of cars on the road had two to three passengers, only two per cent of cars on the road carried a full load of passengers.

Research by the LTA’s Transport Planning and Statistics Department also found that car pooling one vehicle with a driver and four passengers on board is the equivalent to taking at least three to four vehicles off the road.

When multiplied, the potential number of vehicles off the road could be significant.
