The Lomaiviti Green rugby team are aiming for a top 8 position in the Suva Rugby Union’s Escott Shield championship.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Lomaiviti Rugby manager Paula Raqeukai confirmed this indicating that they have a young side and they are trying hard to steer them back on track.

“Our main objective is to get it to the top eight which enable us to secure a spot in the Escott Shield quarterfinals,” he said.

“Despite having a lot of young players who have just played for us for the first time I would say they have performed really well during the past four rounds of games.

“We had recorded two wins and two losses so far in the competition and I feel it’s good for the players to experience some ups and down in the earlier rounds of games so they can be prepared for the future.”

The Lomaiviti Rugby Club was once former holders of the Escott Shield- which is one of the oldest rugby titles in the Oceania region.

Over the years the club has produced top national rugby reps like Marika Vunibaka, Samu Saumaisue, Viliame Gadolo, Saimoni Rokini, Sisa Koyamaibole, Nacanieli Seru, Iosefo Koroiyadi, Seremaia Burotu, Filimoni Bolavucu, Beni Soso and the list goes on.

Raqeukai said they have nine games left before the quarterfinals and the players are aware of the urge to focus on the task ahead of them.

“So the urge is for the boys to work hard in order try get through to the quarterfinals.

“For our side it was a great challenge to play against the Stallions last week but unfortunately we were beaten 24-17.

“We are now looking at bringing in some changes in trying to better the performance of the players for our next game,” he added.
