Mr Piantedosi, who is a month old into his appointment with LTA, said on Saturday there was a need to gather input and suggestions from every stakeholder of LTA in order to settle for a long term strategic and action plan.

“I am saying to stakeholders and I am encouraging stakeholders to come along when we have those workshops to develop those strategic plans to provide input and their views.” Mr Piantedosi said.

He said through dialogue the LTA would be able to listen to their issues and then frame the long term strategic plans and address it at the highest levels.

He has called out for the same with Fiji Bus Operators Association after they recently requested for the assignment of LTA enforcement officers with the bus operators to curb illegal operators.

But he also questioned if the increase in enforcement officers would actually curb the demand for illegal operators.

In fact this would be a cost to the public and the Government and was not guaranteed to curb the illegal transport providers.

“The question is why there is a demand for illegal operation and I am not avoiding the fact that LTA needs to enforce the law we do that,” Mr Piantedosi said.

“But how many more enforcement officers do I need and how much do I spend that is a cost to the public and Government.

“My question was tailored to know the root cause of illegal operators how much of demand is there?

“That gives me a whole range of ideas: is it because they are not getting their services anywhere else, is it because they are cheaper, is it because it serves their need this way, I don’t know.

“But once I understand apart from the enforcement we can implement other solutions together.”
