Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy yesterday extended his best wishes to all the Year Five and Year Seven students sitting for their Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LANA) today and tomorrow.

18,116 Year Five students are expected to sit for the Assessment while 17,022 Year Seven students will be sitting.

“The majority of our children are required to learn in a language different from that of their homes,” Mr Reddy said.

“In other words, they are expected to learn to read and write in a second or third language, which is mostly English.

“For such children, the usual problem of lack of exposure to the target language is always an issue.

“As such, building a solid foundation of basic literacy, that is basic reading and writing is the crux of learning.”

Mr Reddy said the Maths External Exam result was a cause for concern.

“The Mathematics results in 2014, 2015 and 2016 External Examinations have certainly not been encouraging,” he said.
